Mosquitoes – A Health Risk
Mosquitoes are a very serious health related issue that has plagued certain parts of our country. Dallas Texas was at the center of a west nile virus outbreak that is spread through mosquitos. Many scientists attributed this to one of the worst droughts in Texas history in 2011. Hundreds were infected and dozens of people lost their life due to the illness. There have even been some Mosquito Control issues reported around the Charlotte NC area and even a death reported last week in Kannapolis, NC. Many local Mosquito Control Companies have been busy dealing with these pesky little blood suckers using the most environmentally friendly pesticides to protect the community from disease. Certain types of species of mosquitoes transmit some of the most harmful human and livestock diseases such as malaria which is a very common illness transmitted through mosquitos in Africa. In the bloodsucking species of mosquitos(not all species are bloodsucking), only the females actually suck blood and are vectors for deadly diseases. Like all flies, mosquitos go through four stages in their life cycle. The four stages in their life cycle consist of egg, larva, pupa and adult stages. In most species, adult females lay their eggs in standing water, others lay their eggs near the water’s edge and others attach their eggs to aquatic plants.
Eggs hatch to become larvae which grow until they are able to change into pupae. The adult mosquito emerges from the mature pupa as it floats at the water surface. Bloodsucking mosquitos, depending on species, gender, and weather conditions, have potential adult lifespans ranging from as little as a week to as long as several months.
