Squirrels Most Commonly Seen
The most common squirrels seen around Charlotte, North Carolina is the gray tree squirrel and the flying tree squirrel. They are both much like fuzzy rats.
Squirrels front teeth grow throughout their entire life. This helps them in chewing bark, nuts, berries and excavating hollows in wood for nesting. It is a problem when they chew into attics to nest and continue to chew on electrical wires (potential fire) and plastic water, HVAC ductwork and condensate lines.

Gray and flying squirrels usually have 3-8 babies in the early spring and again in late summer. They live 5-6 years but as long as 15 years. Once they “imprint” on an area they will return to it. Sometimes in the summer they will move out into the surrounding hard wood trees only to return to attics in the fall to overwinter and make babies.
Gray squirrels can be heard in your attic early in the morning when they are most active. Flyers are more active at night and create “thumping” noises as they land in the attic and “bowling” noises as they store nuts below your attic insulation above your ceilings.
